Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
