The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live a part of me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his humble Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
