Pacific Bluefin Fish Fetches Unprecedented Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo New Year Sale

A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.

The winning bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets domestically and internationally.

"The first tuna heralds good luck," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the traditional first sale.

Known as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "surprised at the winning bid," stating, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."

This most recent acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:

• He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
• He paid 155 million yen a year later.
• In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which stated the fish would be served at its restaurants across Japan.

The intense energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction was finished.

"I feel like I've commenced the year in a positive way after consuming something so lucky as the year begins," said one satisfied patron.
