The most severe potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by scientists, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and power requirements.
Credible Extremes, Not Forecasts
These impacts, some of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as low probability but possible. The scientists said that these models plugged a hole in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.
"The climate extremes we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," stated the lead researcher who directed the analysis. "The nation has been planning lacking the tools to test against catastrophic outcomes. We've now given planners what they need to plan for environmental results they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."
A Range of Severe Conditions Projections
A second set of worst-case scenarios sets out the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that thermometer readings could soar in certain periods by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.
The chance of the worst-case outcomes happening remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be enacted to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This research was described as similar to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for financial systems.
Critical Scenario Highlights
- Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation fails or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon rainforest perishing emit its enormous store of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is slowing down and losing stability due to global heating. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would be severely challenged and water supplies would be drastically changed," explained the lead researcher.
- Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by planners.
- Pollution Paradox: Temperatures could also be driven up by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is rapidly cleaned up. This unexpected result occurs because tiny specks from industrial activity scatter solar radiation from warming the ground.
Planning for the Worst
These dire projections could be utilized in planning the building of long-term infrastructure, for example expanded cities, nuclear power stations and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these environmental threats could also hasten the drive to reduce carbon pollution.
The research developed the severe projections using a blend of observed and historical experience, digital projections and climate physics. The possibilities do not take into account potential global problems such as the global food shortages and geopolitical instability.
The research was initiated as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have warned that not enough attention was being given to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and examine the threats for severe warming. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "insufficient" by some observers.
