Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined term surfaced a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for doctors to treat a minor who has lost their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials has denied these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.
The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision turns 70 next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on peace has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
