Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative Two-Year Deal.
In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract with the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Player Perks
The agreement grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on award achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for finishing in the top ten.
- Another $250,000 for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.
His deal provides that he will not be optioned to the minors without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a 60-102 season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.
A two-time Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, eclipsing the longstanding record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Despite recording 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third.

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 win. The next night in the championship game against the United States, he hit a tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.
