An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I should apply for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
