A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book a place to stay upon arrival, yet when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open 24 hours. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on public transport and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night in an establishment that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more folks with such compassion.
I must have looked lost since a woman noticed me wandering around the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I shared my predicament and immediately she suggested I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had from her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and a secure location and secure to sleep.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met stay in her room. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – yet very grateful.
I never did attending ANU, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of human compassion. It is my wish life has returned her generosity tenfold. We could all use more people like that woman.
